In the fight against fake news: TikTok

I cannot even begin to tell you how much I hate this platform. No matter what anyone says or does, nothing will make me un-hate it. The reason? There are way too many actually. I contain a similar hate for fake news. For me, both these topics are interlinked because TikTok promotes the spread of fake news. Well it does much more than that. Here are a few examples displaying how TikTok helps spread fake news.

Amidst the illogical protests against NRC, the platform gave voice to theories that the act will be used against the minority faction of people to remove them from the nation. The truth is that no lawful draft exists that will allow NRC to be applied nationwide. That’s right, these people are protesting against, wait for it, nothing. To add fuel to the fire, TikTok gives these people a voice, literally.

Another example of the platform spreading malarkey is during the coronavirus pandemic. People on the platform claimed to cure the disease using various shenanigans. A few others posted videos of them violating the lockdown. Yet another set of people on the platform claimed that the pandemic is god’s act against NRC. In total, there were 35,000 videos on the topic.

What’s worse, the government and law enforcement agencies had to ask them to take these videos down. Unlike other platforms, they do not have a content filter. There is no system to check if people are spreading fake news.

TikTok claims to be a platform that promotes talent. Lip syncing, making dramatic appearances, and making faces are not talents. I have only one request to make of you. If you can sing, dance or, do anything that classifies as talent, publish it on platforms like YouTube and Reddit. Do not waste your time with TikTok.
